What Commercial Solar O&M Costs in California (2026)

Commercial solar O&M in California runs $6 to $50 per kW-DC-year in 2026, depending mostly on system size: small rooftops pay the top of that range, utility-scale pays the bottom. Inverter count, roof access, and the quality of your monitoring stack move the number within each tier.

Cost drivers

What actually moves the price

Four things set your O&M cost: how big the system is, how many inverters it runs, how hard the array is to reach, and how good the monitoring is. Everything else is detail.

System size

The single biggest driver. Every visit carries fixed costs: mobilization, safety setup, reporting, compliance documentation. Spread those over 50 kW and the per-kW rate is high. Spread them over 2 MW and it drops fast. That is why per-kW-year pricing falls as systems get bigger.

Inverter count and type

A site with one central inverter inspects faster than a site with forty string inverters. More units means more inspection points, more firmware to track, and more potential fault sources. Inverter architecture moves both PM time and corrective frequency.

Roof access and mounting

A ground mount you can walk costs less to maintain than a steep rooftop that needs fall protection and staging every visit. Carports sit in between. Access time is labor time, and labor is most of the bill.

Monitoring stack

Good monitoring with string-level data lets us diagnose remotely and roll a truck only when hands are needed. A dead or dumbed-down portal means every question becomes a site visit. Quarterly portal review is cheap insurance against exactly that.

These tiers cover scheduled preventative maintenance and monitoring only. Corrective work, when something breaks, is billed time-and-materials at the contract rates in the next table. These are contract rates for signed O&M customers.

Corrective work

Time-and-materials rates for repairs

When something fails, corrective work is billed at these 2026 contract rates. Billing rounds to the nearest 15 minutes after minimums are met. Prevailing-wage and union work is quoted separately.

Intro assessment vs. contract rates: two different price lists, on purpose

We publish two truck-roll prices, $175 and $150, and they are not a contradiction. The $175 truck roll belongs to the one-time intro site assessment for systems we have never touched. The $150 local truck roll is the contract rate that applies once you are a signed O&M customer. Same trucks, different phase of the relationship.

Pricing and system size

Why small systems cost more per kW than the industry benchmark

Our healthcare O&M case study cites the market benchmark for commercial solar O&M: $8 to $25 per kW-DC-year. Our own small-commercial tier runs $25 to $50 per kW-DC-year. Both numbers are right, and we are not going to hide the gap.

The benchmark reflects mid-size to utility-scale systems, where fixed costs spread across hundreds or thousands of kilowatts. A 50 kW rooftop carries the same mobilization, safety setup, written reporting, and NEC compliance documentation as a much larger site, spread over a fraction of the capacity. Per-kW rates rise as systems shrink. That is arithmetic, not markup.

Check our own table and you will see the same curve: $25-$50/kW-yr at 25-100 kW falls to $6-$14/kW-yr over 1 MW. By mid-commercial size, our tiers sit inside the benchmark range.

Contract or break-fix?

When a PM contract beats break-fix

Break-fix means you call us when something is visibly wrong. The problem is that solar failures are rarely visible: production slips while the dashboard stays green. Here is the math that decides it.

One dispatch starts at $750

A single corrective visit under T&M runs the $150 local truck roll plus the 4-hour solar technician minimum at $150/hr. That is $750 before any parts, at standard hours. A small-commercial PM contract starts at $1,000 a year.

Undetected failures cost more

One failed 20 kW inverter left unrepaired costs about $5,400 in lost production over 6 months (20 kW x 5 hrs/day x 180 days x $0.30/kWh). A PM contract includes the quarterly monitoring review that catches it early.

Defects accumulate quietly

On one portfolio nobody had inspected in years, we checked 4,284 connections and found a 13.3% defect rate. Torque sampling and IR scanning on a PM schedule is how those get caught before they become failures.

The short version: if your system is big enough that one quiet failure costs more than a year of PM, and under NEM 3.0 export economics it usually is, the contract wins. If you only want a one-time look at a system with no service history, start with the takeover assessment.
