Most battery quotes stop at a single unit backing up a critical-loads panel: fridge, a few lights, the internet. That is the right answer for some homes. It was not the right answer for one of our Encinitas customers, so in July 2025 we installed 20 kWh of Enphase battery storage configured for whole-home backup, paired with a 4.35 kW solar array. The entire panel stays live in an outage. The whole project came in at about $37,600 installed.

Salt air is an Encinitas design constraint, not a footnote
From the Leucadia bluffs through downtown and Cardiff-by-the-Sea, homes west of I-5 sit in salt air year-round. Salt does not attack solar panels themselves; it attacks the cheap parts around them. Bare mild-steel fasteners, bargain racking, and unsealed connectors corrode years before a panel loses a watt of rated output. An installer who specs the same bill of materials in Encinitas that they use in Escondido is building in a maintenance problem.
The marine layer adds a second, quieter cost: the moisture leaves a film on the glass that builds up faster than inland dust, and dirty panels produce less. Homes near the beach benefit from a more frequent cleaning cadence than the twice-a-year rule of thumb that works inland.

Does solar plus battery make sense in Encinitas right now?
