SPAN Smart Panel Installation in San Diego: Local Cost and What It Includes
RCH Renewables handles SPAN panel installation in San Diego and North County. Ian Crilly manages every residential SPAN install, bringing experience from more than 20 SPAN installations completed in Washington. The SPAN Panel replaces your electrical panel with one that shows you exactly where your power is going and lets you control it from your phone.
What you actually get
Is the SPAN Panel worth it? What it does that a standard panel cannot
A SPAN Panel is a 200-amp electrical panel with a built-in circuit controller, energy monitor, and backup power manager. It replaces your existing panel and gives you capabilities a standard breaker box does not have.

Circuit-level monitoring
You see exactly how much power each individual circuit in your home is drawing, in real time. Which circuits are using the most? Your EV charger, AC, and HVAC. You will know exactly when and how much. You can name each circuit in the app ("Garage AC," "Tesla Charger," "Refrigerator").
Remote control
You can turn any circuit on or off from the SPAN app. Forget to turn off a space heater before a trip? Done from your phone.
Backup power management
When the grid goes down, SPAN prioritizes which circuits stay on from your battery backup. Rather than a manual transfer switch, you set your priorities in the app: refrigerator and medical equipment stay on, pool pump and decorative lighting turn off.
Load shedding
SPAN can automatically reduce load on non-critical circuits when your home approaches its service capacity, preventing a breaker trip or a costly demand charge spike.
The bundle that makes it worth it
SPAN Drive: smart EV charging built for the SPAN ecosystem
SPAN Drive is a Level 2 EV charger designed to work with the SPAN Panel. Together, they enable real-time load management between your EV charger and the rest of your home.
In many North County San Diego homes, adding a 48-amp EV charger would push the total electrical load over the panel's service rating, requiring a $3,000-$6,000 service upgrade. SPAN Drive monitors your home's total draw through the SPAN Panel and adjusts the charger's output in real time, pulling back when your AC kicks on, ramping up when demand drops. This eliminates the need for a service upgrade in most cases.
- No service upgrade required (in most cases)
- Circuit-level monitoring for every load in your home
- Smart charging that maximizes what you put into your car overnight
- Load shedding to protect your battery backup during outages
- All managed from one app

SPAN Panel
Smart panel that controls and monitors everything
We can design and install all four as a single permitted project: one crew, one permit, one interconnection application.
Local cost
What a SPAN Panel installation costs in North County San Diego
Installed cost depends on:
Your existing panel configuration (size, location, age)
Which SPAN model fits your circuit count (16 to 48 circuits)
Whether your home needs any service entrance work
SPAN Drive included or standalone panel only
Why does it cost this much?
The hardware alone runs around $3,000 depending on the model. The rest is labor, materials, and permit. SPAN installs take significantly more time than a standard panel replacement.
Every circuit from your existing meter-main panel has to be moved to the SPAN Panel. That means pulling wiring, relocating junction boxes, and landing each circuit cleanly in the new panel. A SPAN install is methodical by nature: every circuit gets labeled in the app, every connection needs to be right, and the finished panel is visible in your garage or utility room for the next 20 years.
SPAN Panel installs also require a permit and inspection in San Diego County. Any contractor skipping that is skipping the inspection that protects your equipment warranty and your homeowner's insurance coverage.
What you get from an installer who has done this before
Ian Crilly has completed more than 20 SPAN Panel installs in Washington, where he worked on early deployments before joining RCH. That experience matters for two reasons: speed and finish quality.
The commissioning process (getting the panel online, naming every circuit, verifying app connectivity, and running through backup priority settings with the homeowner) has a learning curve. Ian has been through it enough times to move efficiently without cutting corners.
The result is an install that goes in faster than average and comes out cleaner than one done by someone working through the process for the first time. SPAN is a premium product. It should look like one when it is done.
Product line
SPAN Panel models: sized for your home's circuit count
SPAN makes several panel models covering 16 to 48 controllable circuits. All models support up to 200A utility service, come rated for indoor and outdoor installation (NEMA 3R), and receive over-the-air software updates.
SPAN Panel MAIN
Most common16, 32, or 40 circuits
Includes a main breaker. Standard choice when replacing an existing main panel. Most North County San Diego homes fall into this category.
SPAN Panel MLO
Larger homes24 or 48 circuits
Main lugs only, no built-in main breaker. Used when the main disconnect is upstream, which is common in homes where the meter and main disconnect are separate.
What about larger homes? Homes with more than 48 circuits or more than 200A of service can run multi-panel SPAN configurations. We assess your home's existing panel layout during the site visit and specify the right setup before any work starts. We have not completed a multi-panel SPAN install yet, but we are set up to do them. If your home is large enough to need more than 48 circuits of smart control, ask us about it when you get a quote.
Right fit
The SPAN Panel makes the most sense if you are:
Installing solar + battery + EV charger in one project and want one app to manage everything
Near your panel's service capacity and want to add EV charging without a costly service upgrade
Managing outages and want to control which circuits your backup battery serves automatically
Interested in circuit-level visibility: knowing exactly where your electricity goes each month
Building out a smart home where energy management is part of the system
If you are just replacing a failed breaker or adding a single circuit, the SPAN Panel is more than you need. We will tell you that upfront.
System integration
How SPAN fits into a solar + battery + EV system
SPAN integrates directly with Tesla Powerwall and Enphase batteries. When your Powerwall is managing backup power during an outage, SPAN takes over priority control, automatically shedding non-essential circuits to extend your battery life.
Without SPAN
4 hrs
Battery lasts 4 hours because your pool pump, EV charger, and AC are all drawing from backup simultaneously.
With SPAN
18-24 hrs
SPAN runs only your refrigerator, lights, and Wi-Fi. Non-essential loads are shed automatically.
Authorization
SPAN authorized installer in North County San Diego
SPAN authorizes a small number of electricians per market. Authorization requires verified installation competency for the panel hardware, the gateway, and the app commissioning process.
RCH Renewables is a SPAN authorized installer. We are actively taking on SPAN Panel installs in North County San Diego. Ian Crilly leads every SPAN install we complete.
- Order directly from SPAN (no gray market equipment)
- Commission the panel and app before we leave
- Access to SPAN technical support for any post-install issues
- Work that qualifies for SPAN's equipment warranty

SPAN Panel vs. traditional 200A upgrade: what is the difference
Both are a full panel replacement permitted and installed the same day. The difference is what happens after the install.
| Feature | SPAN Panel | Standard 200A panel |
|---|---|---|
| Circuit-level monitoring | Yes — per circuit, live in app | No |
| Remote circuit on/off | Yes — from anywhere | No |
| Battery backup priority control | Yes — choose which circuits stay on | Whole-home only |
| Solar + battery integration | Native — one app for everything | Works, but separate systems |
| EV charging management | Automatic load shifting | Manual scheduling only |
| Installed cost (North County) | $5,500–$8,000 | $2,500–$4,500 |
| Best fit | Homes with solar + battery, or planning it within 2 years | Safety upgrade only; no solar or battery plans |
Both include permit, inspection, and utility notification. SPAN requires a compatible battery (Tesla Powerwall 3 or FranklinWH). RCH is an authorized SPAN installer.
