Every EV comes with a Level 1 cord. It plugs into a standard 120-volt outlet and charges at about 1.4 kW, which translates to 3-5 miles of range per hour of charging.
If you drive 40 miles a day and plug in at 10pm, you need 8-10 hours to recover what you used. If you drove more than that, you wake up to a car that is not full.
A Level 2 charger runs on 240 volts and charges at 7-11 kW, depending on the unit. That is 30-45 miles per hour. You plug in when you get home, you wake up to a full battery. For most EV owners, a Level 2 charger is not an upgrade. It is what makes the EV actually work with your life.

Do you need a panel upgrade? Here is how we figure that out.
The most common question we get before scheduling an EV charger install: "Do I need to upgrade my electrical panel?"
Many homes in Carlsbad, Fallbrook, and North County San Diego have 200-amp panels with enough available capacity for a 40-50 amp EV charger circuit. Many do not need any panel work. We check your panel before we give you a quote. If your panel can handle the new circuit, we tell you that upfront. If it is near capacity, you have two options and we show you both.
Option 1: Tesla Neurio load management (+$365 to your install)
The Neurio is a small device that mounts in your electrical panel and monitors your home's total power draw in real time. When your AC kicks on or the oven runs, the Neurio automatically reduces the Wall Connector's output to keep your total load within your panel's rating. Adding $365 to your install is significantly cheaper than a $5,000-$9,000 service upgrade.
Option 2: Panel upgrade
If your panel is genuinely undersized, or if you are also adding solar or other loads, a panel upgrade is the right call. We scope this as a separate quote and can combine it with the EV charger installation as one permitted project.
Option 3: SPAN Panel + SPAN Drive
The SPAN smart panel replaces your existing electrical panel with circuit-level load management, EV charging control, circuit monitoring, and outage load shedding in one system.
