Tesla Powerwall 3 Installation in North County San Diego
A Powerwall stores the solar energy you produce during the day and uses it at night, when SDG&E's time-of-use rates are highest. It also keeps your home running during outages. RCH Renewables is a Tesla certified installer serving Carlsbad, Fallbrook, Encinitas, and North County San Diego.
What a Tesla Powerwall actually does for your home
Cuts your bill further.
Under SDG&E's NEM 3.0 rules, the power your panels produce at noon is worth less than the power you draw at 4pm when rates are highest. A Powerwall stores your noon production and releases it in the evening at the rate you would have paid SDG&E.
Keeps your home on during outages.
When the grid goes down, a Powerwall with solar keeps your essential loads running (lights, refrigerator, Wi-Fi, phone charging) for 12-24 hours depending on usage. Your panels continue charging the battery during the day.
Makes your solar more valuable.
Without a battery, your NEM 3.0 export credit is low. With a Powerwall, that daytime production stays in your home and displaces high-rate evening usage. The combination produces meaningfully better bill offsets than solar alone.
What's in the Powerwall 3
Tesla released Powerwall 3 in 2024. The key upgrade: a built-in solar inverter that handles up to 20kW of solar input without a separate inverter, simplifying new installations and reducing equipment cost.
Powerwall makes the most sense if you:
- Have an electric vehicle and want to charge it on stored solar, not grid power at peak rates
- Live in an area with regular SDG&E outages (North County inland sees more than the coast)
- Are installing new solar and want to maximize bill offset under NEM 3.0
- Already have solar and want to reduce your evening grid draw
- Want backup power for your refrigerator, medical equipment, or home office during outages
If your only goal is the cheapest bill offset, solar without a battery can still work. We will tell you both numbers and let you decide.
Powerwall 3 at a glance
A single Powerwall 3 with two Expansion Packs gives you 40.5 kWh total, enough to run a typical North County home for two full days without any solar input.
Get a QuoteAlready have solar? We can add a Powerwall.
You do not need to replace your existing solar system to add a Powerwall 3. Powerwall 3 is compatible with most existing solar setups, including Enphase and SolarEdge systems.
We start with a review of your existing system: inverter type, panel layout, electrical panel capacity, and your 12 months of SDG&E bills. If your existing system is compatible, we install the Powerwall alongside it.
If your original installer is no longer around, we can evaluate and service your system as part of the Powerwall project.
Talk to us about adding a PowerwallEV owner? The Powerwall + EV charger combination makes more sense than either alone.
Your EV charger runs at night, after your panels stop producing. Without a battery, you are charging from the grid at evening TOU rates. With a Powerwall, you charge your car from the solar you produced during the day, at effectively zero cost.
A 10 kWh overnight EV charge at SDG&E peak rates costs roughly $2.80-$3.40 per night, or $1,000-$1,250 per year. A Powerwall offsets most or all of that.
We install Tesla Wall Connectors alongside Powerwall for a complete system: solar produces, Powerwall stores, Wall Connector charges.

We are a Tesla certified installer. Here is what that means for you.
Tesla certifies a limited number of installers per market. The certification covers installation standards for Powerwall wiring, gateway configuration, and app commissioning. An uncertified installer can buy the equipment, but Tesla will not back the install under their warranty program.
When RCH installs your Powerwall:
- The install meets Tesla's standards for warranty coverage
- We commission the system in the Tesla app before we leave
- If there is a firmware or equipment issue, we work with Tesla directly on your behalf
- Your 10-year battery warranty is backed by Tesla, not just us

What Tesla Powerwall installation costs in North County San Diego
Standalone Powerwall 3 install
From $13,729
Adding a battery to your existing solar system. Includes permits, engineering, and labor. Some installs require additional rapid-shutdown hardware (about $349 per device, roughly one per three panels of existing solar), which we confirm during the site assessment.
New solar + Powerwall bundle
From $23,724
4 kW solar plus Powerwall 3 bundled. Rapid-shutdown is part of the solar work, no separate line item. Bigger solar saves more on the battery, scaling to $8,000 off at 12 kW. Full tier table below.
Solar + Powerwall Bundle Pricing
Save up to $8,000 on the battery as solar size grows
Standalone Powerwall 3 (no solar or solar under 4 kW): $13,729. Tile, hard-access, ground-mount, or multi-array installs may price higher. We confirm exact numbers after a free site assessment.
See monthly paymentsThe federal residential clean energy credit that covered batteries expired December 31, 2025. There is no current federal rebate available for residential battery installations.
Need more storage? Add a Powerwall Expansion Pack.
The Powerwall Expansion Pack adds 13.5 kWh of storage capacity to an existing Powerwall 3 system. It does not include an inverter or gateway (those are already handled by the Powerwall 3), so it is a lower-cost way to increase your storage.
An Expansion Pack is for larger homes where a single Powerwall does not cover overnight usage, EV owners who want to fully charge from stored solar without depleting backup reserves, or homes with higher-than-average evening loads.
One Expansion Pack installed
Includes permits and engineering
Two Expansion Packs installed
~$8,500 each plus approximately $1,000 for permits and engineering

Powerwall 3 + two Expansion Packs: two full days of backup without any solar input
What happens on Powerwall installation day
A Powerwall installation typically takes 4-6 hours for a standalone battery add-on, or 1-2 days when paired with new solar.
Mount the Powerwall
Garage wall or exterior. We recommend the location based on your setup, shade exposure, and clearances.
Wire the gateway
The control unit connects to your electrical panel, enabling automatic backup switching when the grid goes down.
Configure backup circuits
Install a critical load panel or configure your existing panel for the circuits you want backed up.
Commission in the Tesla app
We set everything up in the Tesla app so you see real-time production, storage, and consumption before we leave.

Tesla Powerwall questions, answered.
Questions we get on almost every quote call, answered honestly.
Have a question not listed here? Ask us.Does a Powerwall work without solar?
Yes. A Powerwall can be charged from the grid and used as a backup power source even without solar panels. That said, the bill savings are minimal without solar. You are mostly paying to charge from the grid and discharge at a slightly lower rate. The combination of solar + Powerwall is where the economics make sense.
Is the federal battery tax credit still available?
No. The residential clean energy credit that covered home battery storage expired December 31, 2025. There is no federal rebate currently available for residential battery installations.
How long will a Powerwall keep my home running during an outage?
A single Powerwall holds 13.5 kWh. A typical North County home draws 1.5-2.5 kWh per hour on essential loads (refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, device charging, one AC unit). That gives you 6-9 hours overnight. If your solar is producing the next day, the Powerwall recharges and you can run indefinitely as long as the sun is out.
Can I add a Powerwall to my existing solar system?
Yes. Powerwall 3 is compatible with most existing solar setups including Enphase and SolarEdge. We start by reviewing your existing inverter, panel configuration, and 12 months of SDG&E bills to confirm compatibility before quoting.
Store your solar. Charge your car. Keep the lights on.
A Tesla Powerwall paired with solar in North County San Diego is the difference between panels that offset some of your bill and a system that covers it. RCH Renewables is Tesla certified, Fallbrook-based, and handles the full install: panels, battery, EV charger, permits, and SDG&E interconnection.
